We know that Lucian's circumstances were humble, and that he was apprenticed to a sculptor; that he soon came to regard sculpture as an illiberal art, and after a period of study became a teacher of rhetoric and subsequently a public lecturer. We know too, that, by the time he was forty, his calling had become profitable enough to allow of his retiring from it and settling down to a life of literary leisure at Athens.
