Les colons européens, qui, d'après de foibles analogies, croient retrouver partout dans la végétation des tro piques les plantes de leur patrie, appellent les Malpighia Alc0m0que (arbre à liège) sans doute à cause de l'écorce tubéreuse du tronc. Cette écorce renferme du tannin, et dans un autre Malpighia (byrsonima Moureila) qui est l'arbre fébrifuge de Cayenne, on suppose, non sans raison l'existence de la quinine ou de la cinchonine réunies au tannin.
