Stando al senso letterale pare che il poeta si limiti a lodare la singolare pietà di Betto, che, in mezzo a tanti affari politici, trattati tutti felicemente, trova il tempo di compiere in modo esemplare le pratiche reli giose obbligatorie per tutti i cristiani e di assistere per di più quotidianamente alla messa privata nel convento di santa Caterina; ma forse egli volle anche dire che la pietà è la virtù fondamentale per riuscire buoni e sapienti amministratori.
