But the hope to which the text refers is not an instinct, but a gift, and is not, therefore, the common heritage of all mankind. It is a hope of heaven, of which the world knoweth not, and to which the sinner is, of necessity, a stranger. Men tell you, indeed, that they have a hope of heaven, but, resolved into its elements, it is but a vague anticipation of future blessedness, resting upon no sure foundation, and working no beneficent results. Those who have not believed in Jesus are excluded from this hope, both by their prevalent unbelief and by the declared word of God: The hope of the unjust man perisheth. The hope of the wicked shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
