HE editor, having {pent fevéral yearsxin travelling among the churches in the late -remarkable feafon of Divine influences, witneffed the great benefit of the ufe of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, which Has been prevalent with this glorious work. He has oht ferved, however, that fome 1n frequent ufe were very incorreét, and that a number of thofe molt efteemed were not to be found in any of the collections extant: this inconvenience be ing much felt withing to add every thing 1n his power to the 1mprovement of the people of Zion and by the requefl: oflhis friends, who apprehended that his extenfive intercourfe had made, him acquainted with the compofures of this kind, which appear molt generally for edi fication he was induced to undertake this Wo.rl< He has not feleéted any of Dr. Watts' s Pfalms and Hymns, for they are all valuable, and make a volume entire, and are every where difperfed. He has afixed to the'hymns all the names known to him of their reputed au thors of a number which have been long ln \ufe, the authors were unknown: thofe mark ed with the letter A, were either orig'inally Compofed, or materially altered, by the editor.
