However this question may be decided, there is no room for doubt as to the general purport of such a vow. Clearly it was the natural expression of that tender piety, of that deep devotion to the Name, and Honour, and Truth of God, which illuminates the whole character of the Son of Jesse, and which raises him, in spite of deep falls, to an extraordinary height of per sonal sanctity. Here, as Often elsewhere in the Psalter, we observe how all considerations are postponed by the Psalmist to that one which had a first claim on his intelligence and on his heart. He was an earthly mon arch, and his throne was by no means secure from dan ger; he was a statesman, and his people were in urgent need of an active and fatherly government; he had a large family, and we know that he was attached by an affection of no common strength to its individual mem bers he was a poet, and he might have felt that such hymns as his were a worthy if not a sufficient cultiva tion to the intellectual and spiritual life of his country.
