There has been much difference of opinion not only as to the morphological and cultural characters of the acne bacillus, but also concerning the exact part which it plays in the symptomatology of acne in contra-distinction to that of the staphylococcus. While these points are still in doubt, the employment of vaccines in the treatment of this disease must be, to a large extent, empirical, and it will be necessary in the first place to give a brief account of the work of various Observers who have investigated the subject both from an aetiological and a therapeutic standpoint.
