Two young high school boys in plus-fours pushed their heads around the flaps Of the tent, watched the little old negro deliver his sermon with his wide gestures, then grimaced at one another. One youth silently imitated the megaphone-mouth Of the colored preacher, convulsing his companion. Then, only half-smothering their mirth, they swaggered inside and slid onto the last bench.

For only a moment did they listen quietly, then one dug his elbow into the other's ribs as a signal that he was about to begin the fun.
