Excerpt from Science Reports, 1923, Vol. 1: A Collection of Non-Technical Papers on Recent Progress in Science
The appearance Of the galaxy or milky way which girdles the Sky and which the telescope resolves into a vast swarm Of faint and distant stars, makes it evident that the visible universe is arranged substantially in the form Of a thin, flat cluster; but it does not tell us whether the stars form a single, more or less symmetrical cluster, with the milky way a phenomenon due merely to our looking out thru a longer vista of stars in the radial directions, or whether the star clouds Of the galaxy are grouped into one or more rings, or coils, surrounding a local cluster Of stars in which the solar system is situated, and separated from it by more or less empty space.
