Inhaltsangabe

Andre Gide's PALUDES (1895) was one of the beginnings of the modern novel; his masterpiece, LES FAUX MONNAYEURS (1925), is one of its most ambitious achievements. But Gide's name was familiar the world over to millions as a controversial figure, hisviews on moral and political matters being better known than his literary work. In 1895 he went to Algiers, where Oscar Wilde introduced him to a sexual awakening which found expression in the one great love of his life, Marc Allegret, the film director. In 1930 he published CORYDON, the long-gestated dialogue on homosexuality. In the 1930s he became a Communist but was vilified by the Left when he criticised the Party. In 1947 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
