His memoirs describe the germination of two of his main interests: entertaining an audience and music. The first led him - after service in World War Two during which time he was wounded at Cassino - into films and television, culminating (when he was Chairman and Managing Director of Granada Television) in Coronation Street and Jewel in the Crown.
