Norman A. Polansky is professor of social work at the University of Pennsylvania. His publications include Ego Psychology and Communication, Roots of Futility, Child Neglect, and other monographs.

This book contains the distillation of fifteen years of the study of child neglect. It seeks to answer a series of interlocking questions: What does neglect typically look like? How widespread a phenomenon is it? What sequelae does it leave on the personalities of the children? How costly are these sequelae for the rest of society? Who are the neglectful parents, and what forces in their lives have damaged their parenting? From what we now know about them, what principles may we infer about the tactics for their treatment, person by person and family by family? And where do we stand with respect to strategies for our large-scale programs?
