The tractate opens with a vast construction on rules of acquisition, filling the whole of chapter 1. This construction is developed in its own framework and addresses the topic before us only in the opening rule, M. 1: 1. But it serves as an excellent introduction to the shank of the tractate, chapters 2 and 3, because it specifies the ways a girl is betrothed.
