Her father was the Guyanese writer Jan Carew. Lisa St Aubin de Terán was born in 1953 (to Joan Mary Murray and Jan Carew) and brought up in Clapham in South London. She attended James Allen's Girls' School. Her memoir, "Hacienda" (1998), describes how she fell into a whirlwind first marriage to an exiled Venezuelan landowner, Jaime Terán, and lived for seven years at a remote farm in the Andean region of Venezuela. Her second husband was the Scottish poet and novelist George MacBeth. In 1982 she published her first novel, "Keepers of the House", winning the Somerset Maugham Award and a place on Granta's "Best of Young British Novelists" list (1983, issue #7). "The Slow Train to Milan", winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, followed in 1983. In the same year she moved to Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalen in Norfolk. After her second marriage ended she returned to live in Italy. (Wiki) ***'The novels of Lisa St Aubin de Terán have established her as a writer of astonishing narrative skill and imaginative power. In 1983 she received an Eric Gregory Award for Poetry, although this is her first published collection. In "The High Place", she reveals a voice of rich and vibrant resonance. The poems are tributes to the workers on the Hacienda El Hatico - the High Place - near the village of Mendoza Fria in Venezuela. Like the turning of the mill-wheel, the years of toil for generations of peasants and the undulations of the land, the rhythm of this poetry is inexorable' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the true first edition. One of Lisa St Aubin de Terán's harder to find first editions, and her only book of poetry. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Artikel-Nr. 2268
