Excerpt: ... Compendious System of Natural Philosophy, part ii. Hydrostatics. "chap, L Of the Phenomena which arise from the mutual Action of the Particles of Fluids upon one another, itn the former Part of this Essay, I have I laid down and explained the general I Laws of Nature, and deduced from thence those Phænomena which are in a strict: and proper Sense denominated Ms.' In a larger Sense all the Effects and Operations of natural todies upon one another may be called Mechanical; as beng all subject to the general Laws of Motion. In Hydrostatics fluids are governed by the Laws of Mechanism, as much as 4icMechanical Powers are; the fame holds gf the Ras of chanted; I proceed nov" to an Explanation of such, as Philosophers have comprehended under the Name of Hydrostatics; the Intention of which is to explain the Nature of Fluids,, and the Manner in which they act upon one another and upon Solids. H. The Nature of a Fluid, as distinguished" from that of a Solid or hard Body, consists in this, viz. that its Particles are so loosely connected together, that they readily move out of their Places, when pressed with the least Force one way more than another f. Light, as will be seen when we come to Optics; and in the larger Bodies of the Planetary System, Mechanism equally prevails, as has been demonstrated by Sir Isaac Newton; which wo shall endeavour to make out (when we treat of Astronomy) so far as the Nature of our Design will permit. Some Philosophers" make the following Distinction m Fluids i those which flow or spread themselves till their Surface becomes level or horizontal, they call Liquid i in contradistinction to Flame, Smoak, Vapo...
