Excerpt: ... FOUR INTERESTING QUESTIONS. Dear Friends: Among the influences which affect our lives there are few greater than the answers to the following questions: Who are our friends? How do we talk with them? What kind of letters do we write and receive? What books most interest us? Four points only, and yet if I could feel that you would answer them frankly, I would be sure that I knew you and your real inner life. I have heard some one say, "A girl is known by the company she keeps," and I cannot help but feel that it is true. A friend! This word means much. It suggests one who is in thorough sympathy with you, one whom you like to be with, and with whom you can talk and tell out your thoughts. One must also trust a true friend, and feel that she is faithful and devoted to you as you are to her. Much of the happiness and purity of our lives depends on our choosing wise companions and friends. Most of us trust in this matter to chance, and pick up any one whom we casually meet and call them friends. I would rather say acquaintances. There is a great difference in these two words. It is right to be courteous and considerate to every one with whom we come in contact, but to choose them as real friends is another matter. Again, it is not always those who live the nearest to us nor those who are relatives whom we feel are our friends. We need companionship and society, but be careful as to the influence which comes from it. It must be helpful or the reverse. How is it with you? After spending an afternoon or evening with your friends, how do you feel? You have had a good time, yes; but has it been a time satisfying to you?
