Dr Thomson preached, in the afternoon, an admirable discourse to a large audience, from Acts xxiv. 16. This was a sort of historical day in the congregation, because it saw the last burden of congregational debt removed,--a debt which, for forty years, had been a drag upon its usefulness, and a debt, the principal of which had been more than once paid in interest upon it. Mr Muir preached, in the forenoon, very appropriately and powerfully, from Titus i. 9, and iii. 7--" Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.--That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." In his supplementary remarks he mentioned, that out of 2132 Sabbath-days since he was ordained, he had been absent only eight of them from sickness; also, that only six of the original members of the congregation were now under his ministry. What a crowd of recollections to look back upon! The intimation of the forenoon collection being £51:18:8, gave evident satisfaction. Eev. Mr Kirkwood preached a very fit discourse, in the afternoon, from Zechariah xiii. 1--"In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness."
