Excerpt: ... its being the place which the King frequents,--by the attendance of the gardener, and by the interview they shortly after had with two persons, clothed in raiment that shone like gold, and with countenances beautiful and clear as unclouded day. I am fully satisfied that, in the soul of a dying believer, there is often a peace and a joy which passeth all understanding; and that, as death clears the film of mortality from his eyes, he sees into the eternal world, and holds spiritual intercourse with its inhabitants. In the next Lecture I shall therefore entreat my hearers to fix their attention on the simple operation of his mind, as he approaches the river of Death, encouraged and directed as be is by those to whom we have so often referred, as "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister to the heirs of salvation." LECTURE XX. Description of the River of Death--Diversified Experience of Believers, while passing through it--The Pilgrims Arrival at the Kingdom of Heaven--Description of their Blessedness--Concluding Reflections. It was remarked, in the course of the preceding Lecture, that one great end to be answered by that state of holy tranquillity with which believers are sometimes favoured before death, is, that they may obtain strength to suffer those pains which often accompany dissolution. It was also remarked that the suspension of their joys is but momentary, to be resumed after death; and that then they would acquire a permanency which eternity itself would not be able to remove. It would be of importance to carry the recollection of these observations throughout the present Lecture. We are informed, that, as the Pilgrims kept advancing towards the eternal world, their celestial guardians received from them an account of the many trials they had ...
