Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XI. CONCLUSION. There is scarcely a thing in life to which men mayapply themselves which can show more self-sacrificingdevotion than science. Faraday gave up a fortune that he might give himself wholly to investigation; and died poor, but without regretting that he had made the choice he had. The scientists of the world are, as a class, men of moderate means. Original experimentation is mostly carried on at a financial loss to the experimenter. Many scientists devote the whole of their surplus income to making collections and trying experiments, sometimes, indeed, denying themselves many of the comforts of life that they may do this work, and attend the meetings of the various scientific societies. "Substantialists" have declared modern science to be heartless and to drift wholly toward selfishness. Many English literary men, politicians and ministers have lectured in America and carried some United States dollars home in their pockets. So American lecturers in England think a large collection of coins with the Queen's image upon them is a nice memento of their journey. The ' substantialists" consider Prof. Tyndall the High Priest in this modern Temple of Selfishness. The proceeds of Prof. Tyndall's lectures in the United States amounted to #13,033. After the course was finished he made this announcement: "As an evidence of my good will toward the people of the United States, I desire to devote this sum to the advancement of theoretic science and the promotion of original research, especially in the department of physics in the United States." The trustees allowed this sum to accumulate by the constant addition of unappropriated income until it amounted to $32,000.
