Excerpt: ... A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NEW MEXICAN BOTANY. By Paul C. Standley. INTRODUCTION. This paper has been prepared to give the student of New Mexican botany the obvious advantages of a special bibliography. Since no general flora of the Territory has been compiled, the results of the work of various earlier investigators are available only in scattered publications, some of them of such a character that they would not ordinarily be referred to. A reasonably complete bibliography will prevent oversights and save the labor of long and sometimes fruitless search. A bibliography of New Mexican botany was suggested by the examination of a similar paper recently published in the University of Colorado Studies listing the literature of the plant life of that State. Several such lists of botanical papers had been published earlier, like those of Mr. C. V. Piper in his Flora of Washington and of Mr. J. W. Blankinship in the Montana Agricultural College Science Studies, but none that the writer has seen is so comprehensive as this more recent one. Piper lists but 54 titles and Blank: inship still fewer, while for Colorado more than 500 publications are cited as dealing more or less directly with the flora of that State. The titles of the Colorado list cover a wide range of subjects, while those of the earlier ones were confined chiefly if not entirely to taxonomic botany. The present paper is modeled upon that compiled for Colorado with certain modifications. The latter includes many titles useful only in ecological study, like those dealing with the meteorology and geology, and with the soils of the State.
