The third--McPherson--was a man of note Whose tastes ran wild on golf, and things remote The fourth--one Saunders--was an ex-M.P. Who lost his seat because he took his stand Too often at the all-alluring tee. And nearly lost his head, because his hand So frequent held the pluck-inspiring brew--A little water--lots of mountain dew! These four, divided in all other things, Become united in the game of swings. A match is made, in which the man of lines And he who to Philology inclines, Shall play McPherson, of historic fame, And Southern Saunders, who adores the game. The stakes are friendly--losers have to pay Complete expense throughout the pleasant day. As such a chance is seldom to the fore, To see the sport we'll watch the game, and score. The pawky caddie makes the Saxon's tee,1 "Avaunt," says Saunders, "that's too weak for me." Then from the level, off a splendid swing, The globe becomes a very distant thing. McPherson grins with undisguised delight, To see the ball compelled to such a flight.
