As many plants do, occasionally, have their stamens and pistils separate in some flowers, Smith proposes to confine this class to those in which' the three kinds of flowers differ in their general structure. By Concealment. 24. Crtptog Amia, stamens and pistils obscure. Ex. Ferns, Lichens, Seaweeds, and Mushrooms. MoicogYnja, 1 style or sessile stigma. Digynia, 2 styles or sessile stigmas Trigynia, 3--Tetragynia,4--Pentagynia, 5--Hexagynia, 6--, Observation, Of rare occurrence. Heptagynia, 7------Observation. Still more rare. OcTAGYNIA, 8 Observation. Scarce!' occurs at all. Enneagynia,9------Observation. Hardly an instance known. Decagynia,10--Dodecagynia, about 12 Polygynia, many Observation. 1. The grasses which constitute a natural order, belong principally to the third Class, Thuvsria, and to the second Order, Digynia, 2. To the fifth Class, Pehtakhma, and to the second Order, Oigynia, belong the great natural family of umbelliferous plants, ot which the Parsnip and Carrot are examples. Class 14, IHdynamia. In this class there is but a single pistil. The orders, both natural, are characterised by the fruit. 1. Gymnospermia, (yfjuvof gumnos, naked, and rxtfn sperma, seed) seeds naked in the bottom of the calyx, almost universally 4. Ex. Mint, Hyssop, Catmint, Thyme. Observation Corolla usually ringent. 2. Angiospermia, (yye« aggos, a capsule, and o-ripn. sperma) seeds in a capsule, numerous. Ex. Toad-flax, Antirrhinum, Chelone and Jlimulus. Observation. The personate flowers belong to this order. Class 15. Tetradynamia. This, like the last, has but one pistil. It has two orders, both very natural, and distinguished by the form of the fruit. 1.
