I am afraid we are useless lilies," said Charlotte. "Oh, wait a little!" cried Laura Ruthven; "we haven't had time to find a career yet." "What career can we possibly have now? A wife has a career, and an old maid has a career, but what is there except women's rights and philanthropy for the young widow?--except philandering." "Who knows?" said Laura Ruthven.
