At one P.m. on the 26th of October, about 5000 of the enemy attacked the Second Division, with several columns of infantry, supported by artillery. Large bodies of skirmishers covered their advance, but the pickets of the 30th and 49th Regiments resisted them with great firmness. The Second Division, under Sir De Lacy Evans, had the honour of repulsing them with very great loss, which was estimated at 600 men. They took eighty prisoners, and about 140 of their dead were scattered amongst the bushes near their camp. Two officers were taken, one of whom had not long before made Lord Dunkellin prisoner. We had about eighty men killed and wounded. The enemy advanced at first with great firmness and rapidity. Their guns having gained the Mound-hill, rendered them every assistance. We had eighteen guns in position, together with the artillery of the First Division, who commenced excellent practice on the artillery of the enemy, which in the course of half an hour was silenced. The attention of our guns was now directed to their columns, and a Lancaster being brought to bear on them, did very great execution; and being assisted by our skirmishers, put the enemy to flight in the greatest confusion. They were pursued over the ridges by our men towards the head of the Bay; and it was with the greatest difficulty that Major-General Pennefather could stop them, so eager were they in the pursuit.
