Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. Transactions in Consequence of the Issue of the Attack.--Observations thereon. The officers taken with the different divisions were marched, as they surrendered, to the Castle, where they were politely received by Generals Linier and Balbiani. It required the exertions of the Spanish gentlemen who escorted the British, to protect them from the insults of many of the rabble, several of whom even levelled their firearms at them. The privates were distributed into various prisons. The officers in the Castle having signed their paroles, by which they bound themselves not to carry arms, directly or indirectly, against His Spanish Majesty, or his allies, during the war, or until regularly exchanged, we had refreshments brought us, and were disposed of in two large rooms looking westward over the parapet along the beach, and a strong guard, of their best looking grenadiers, placed over us, under the plea of protecting our persons. Our fleet had been lying opposite to Buenos Ayres for some days, but entirely ignorant of our operations. The larger ships could not come within five or six miles of the shore. They knew by the firing, on the morning of the 5th, that we were pushing into the town; and on observing our colours flying on El Re tiro, the smaller armed vessels drew close in and opened a communication, bringing on shore refreshments for. the troops. General Whitelocke had removed his head quarters to the neighbourhood of El Retiro; and it would appear as if further operations against the town had been settled between the naval and military commanders, as orders were given to assist in landing some battering cannon, and the gun brigs took up a position, the next morning, under the pier, for bombarding the Castle and neighbourhood.
