"Let me first, my dear fir," said Asmodeus, lt prepare your coffee, and then you will be so good as to prepare your attention." This little arrangement being settled, the Devil upon Two Sticks began the following singular relation: Da An An historical Description of /£r Universal Spy, or Unsuspected Politician. "Mr.-, for that is the gentleman's name," said Asmodeus, " is descended from a family of great respect among the antient gentry of the North of England: his father, who was a younger brother, was, in the earliest part of lise, a supercargo in the service of the East India Company; but an old maiden aunt leaving him a very handsome fortune, he never repeated his voyage, and left his original, as well as acquired property, very much improved, at his death, to his only son, the object of our present consideration, who was then about eight years old, and had been, for some time, placed at a private school of reputation, in the neighbourhood of London.--The valuable woman, his mother, had died about two years before; a circumstance which was the principal cause of his father's death, whose whose sensibility could not bear up against such an irreparable loss: so that our young gentleman was left to the care of two distant relations, who, with unremitting attention, fulfilled the directions his father gave concerning his education, when he Jay on his death-bed.
