The term 'laser control of atoms and molecules' encompasses various challenges, including the selection of atomic and molecular velocities for Doppler-free spectroscopy, the manipulation of atomic positions and velocities through trapping and cooling, and the control of atomic and molecular processes such as ionization and dissociation. These advancements aim to detect single atoms and molecules, as well as to separate isotopes and nuclear isomers. Over recent decades, significant progress has been made in addressing these issues, leading to the emergence of new fields within the international research community. For instance, the development of laser cooling and trapping has given rise to the study of ultracold matter, including quantum atomic and molecular gases. Additionally, the exploration of laser control has expanded from non-coherent to coherent processes in molecules. Techniques such as optical tweezers have demonstrated successful laser control of position with microparticles, while laser photo-ionization on surfaces has paved the way for innovative laser-assisted mass spectrometry methods for macromolecules. This book aims to provide a unified perspective on these topics, making it a valuable resource for readers across various fields of laser science and its applications. Zustand: New. This text treats laser light as a universal tool to control matter at the atomic and molecular level, one of the most exciting applications of lasers. Lasers can heat matter, cool atoms to ultra-low temperatures where they show quantum collective behaviour, and can act selectively on specific atoms and molecules for their detection and separation.
