They are accomplished underwater swimmers, diving to great depths, and they are often regarded as the northern hemisphere counterparts of the penguins. Among bird families, they exhibit an unusual degree of variability in their breeding sites - from old-growth, temperate forests to barren sea-cliffs, and rocky outcrops among glaciers on high mountains. Chick development is also variable - in some species chicks leave for sea soon after hatching, while in others they grow to full size at the nest site. This diversity of behaviour makes the family an excellent subject for the study of adaptation. While describing the major features of the family, the authors also discuss what comparisons among the auks can tell us about the adaptive significance of various traits.
