Softcover. Zustand: Very Good-. Minor stain to rear wrap and foreedges. ; 90 pages; This text is designed to allow the intermediate/advanced student to read Latin rapidly, without having constantly to consult a dictionary or grammar. It contains: -Introduction -Latin text with same/facing page -Vocabulary notes -Grammatical commentary -Full vocabulary -Historical commentary -Index of place names and persons. The Res Gestae reveals as much about Augustus and his accomplishments through what it omits as what it contains. This edition allows students rare access to non-literary historical Latin, to the "queen" of Latin inscriptions: the accomplishments of the emperor Augustus, as he sought to have them presented. Original brochure. Zustand: Sehr gut. 90 p. Cover rubbed and slightly bumped, otherwise very clean. - This edition of the Res Gestae is designed for use as an historical source by sixth form pupils and undergraduates who may be studying either history or classics, some of whom may have little or no Latin or Greek. The Latin text is, therefore, accompanied by a translation, and all Latin or Greek in the notes is also translated. Some Latin words, which have no adequate English equivalents, have been left in the translation, but they are all explained in the notes or in the appendix on Roman constitutional terms. The Latin text printed is that of V. Ehrenberg and A. H. M. Jones (Documents Illustrating the Reigns of Augustus and Tiberius, Clarendon Press, 1955), with minor changes of punctuation. In order to facilitate reading we have omitted the square brackets which indicate restorations of the Latin; the sense, if not the exact words, is certain, and we feel that a forest of brackets is forbidding to the readers we have in view. We have also not given the Greek paraphrase of the Latin, on which such restorations may be based, though we have occasionally referred to it in notes; it is easily accessible in Ehrenberg and Jones. Those who wish to study textual problems may turn to Res Gestae Divi Augusti, edited by Jean Gagé (second edition, Paris, 1950), which gives, by variations of typeface, exact indications of the authority behind each word or letter.
