Suetonius' biographical sketches of the teachers of "grammar" and rhetoric survive only in part and are fairly brief; yet it would be difficult to name another text of similar scope that is a more productive resource for the study of Roman cultural history in the classical period. For the early history of Roman education it is literally indispensable, and it is a precious repository as well for the understanding of Roman Social and cultural relations, and even for the social history of freedmen and slaves. This new critical edition of Suetonius' rich and often curious text is accompanied by commentary, the most thorough and detailed so far available, elucidates Suetonius' method of compilatioon and places the stories he tells in their social and historical context.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Robert Kaster has been a Professor at Chicago since 1989, and is a rising star. He has been awarded two fellowships (from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation). Between 1981 and 1990 he was the editor of the prestigious journal Classical Philology. He is the author of Guardians of Language (University of California at Berkeley Press, 1988), which received the Goodwin Award of Merit of the American Philological Association in 1991.

Suetonius and the Elder Seneca -- Index -- (Excerpt:) PREFACE: THE premisses underlying my text and apparatus, and discussions of a number of textual problems, have already been set out in the monograph Studies on the Text of Suetonius 'De grammaticis et rhetoribus': the history and constitution of the text accordingly take up little space in the present book. The introduction is meant above all to be a 'user's guide' to the text, orienting the reader to the tradition in which Suetonius was writing and to his aims and methods. I have included a translation both to make my own understanding of the text clear and to make the DGR useful to teachers who must introduce the basic structures of Roman culture to students with little or no Latin. The commentary, however, is intended primarily for advanced students and scholars and pre- sumes a knowledge of Latin and Greek; grammatical and stylistic matters are for the most part addressed only when they are implicated in special problems of interpretation. A draft of the introduction, edition, and commentary was com- pleted in early autumn 1992 and was revised over the next twelve months. I have tried to refer to work that became available in the course of my revisions, most notably E. Courtney's valuable commentary on the fragmentary Latin poets. I was not able to consult M.-C. Vacher's new edition of the DGR (Paris, 1993), of which I learned only as I set about writing this preface (.).
