The ethnographic focus here is the Meo community, Mulims of "Rajput" status whose territory "Mewat" covers the triangular area at the intersection of the states of U.P., Haryana, and Rajasthan, adjoining Delhi. In terms of family and kinship, and the associated ceremonies, myths, and legends, the Meo have long been regarded as unusual among Indian Muslims, a phenomenon that this study thoroughly explores.
