Connecting the theory to real life is essential. McLaughlin's text - the first text in this market to apply a more pedagogical approach to the study of labor economics - makes that leap for students. The first edition of McLaughlin's text provided a concise and reasonably priced primary text for the Labor Economics course. With its more frequent stop and practice points for students and its integration of empirical data into the narrative, many adopters have found it to suit their method of teaching nicely. The book focuses on core principles, keeping the economic models as simple as possible and embedding the applications in the main narrative - not in boxed asides. In the second edition, the author's limited focus on labor applications may need to be expanded to spend more time different sides of the larger policy debates centering around employment and wages.
