He is a graduate of Haverford College, a former VISTA volunteer, speech writer for Senator Charles Mathias of Maryland, and assistant to James Reston at the Washington Bureau of the New York Times. His grandfather and his father edited the Falmouth Enterprise and his great-uncle was for many years the editor of the Vineyard Gazette. He is the author of at least four novels and three works of nonfiction. The author was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, who traveled to Fenway Park in the summer of 1987 to see if the team would repeat as champions of the American League. The Red Sox did not finish first in 1987, but Hough found plenty to cheer about, and here he gives us his inside view of the team in a period of transition. He shows us Fenway Park as fans rarely see it: the dugout, where coaches Johnny Pesky and Joe Morgan play their own version of baseball trivia: where batting coach Walt Hriniak teaches the fine art of hitting to anyone who will listen, including the author; where manager Joe McNamara intimidates all but the most seasoned journalists with his cold stares.
