Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) is regarded as the founder of the modern Conservative Party. Although his ancestry was Jewish, he became one of the most popular politicians of the 19th century. Aspiring to 'One Nation' Toryism, he stole the Liberal's clothes by piloting through Parliament the Reform Bill of 1867 which enfranchised large numbers of working men. His grandiose foreign policy proved popular in an age when Britain really ruled the waves. He bestowed the title of Empress of India on Queen Victoria and acquired Fiji, the Transvaal, Cyprus and the Suez Canal. But it was his personality that was extraordinary. He was a reckless gambler with his career, an accomplished novelist, and a deadly debater.

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Wrappers. Spine slightly creased. New edition (biography first published by Methuen, 1951), from the library of the author's literary executor, Sir Michael Holroyd. "Hesketh Pearson was sixty-two when, in June 1949, he began writing his biography of Benjamin Disraeli," writes Holroyd. "For almost twenty years, since the death of Lytton Strachey in 1932, he had been Britain's most popular and prolific biographer, producing what Richard Ingrams was to call 'a gallery of wits and mischief makers'. His subjects were mainly writers: Oscar Wilde, Conan Doyle, William Hazlitt, Charles Dickens. Though he also published Lives of Tom Paine and Henry Labouchère, he did not usually choose political subjects. But 'something about Benjamin Disraeli had always attracted me', he wrote. 'The mere fact that a Jew should become the chosen leader of a landed aristocracy in a period of snobbish exclusiveness was evocative enough, but added to that his wit delighted me and his mysterious aloofness intrigued me.'".
