Inspired by a journey to Haiti in 1997 and by Graham Greene's descriptions of the island in THE COMEDIANS, the author, apparently unprepared by life in London, resolved to retrace Greene's footsteps. Her travels took her to countries as diverse as Paraguay, Vietnam, Sierra Leone and Cuba to see whether the places written about so vividly by Greene were really as bizarre as described, and if they had been affected by the passing of time. From voodoo ceremonies and gunshots after dark in Haitito conversations with child soldiers in Sierra Leone, each journey took on a life of its own.
