First published to great acclaim in 1983 and continuously in print ever since (UK sales of almost 10,500), Asa Briggs's magnificent exploration of English society has been totally revised in the light of new scholarship and brought right up to the present day. Written in a personable, idiosyncratic way, Briggs's approach to history is to emphasize human experience rather than concepts, switching from kitchen to drawing room or garden, from field to factory, reading and interpreting every cultural signpost he passes.
Biografía del autor:
Asa Briggs was born in 1921 at Keighley, Yorkshire, and was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where he received a double first in history. He also received a first-class honours degree in economics from London University. Professor Briggs' main field of historical research is nineteenth-century social and cultural history, on which he has written extensively. His works include 'Victorian Cities', 'Victorian Things' and 'The Age of Improvement'.
