Like the "Penguin Guide to Ancient Egypt", this book is designed to be more than a guide book. Although it will follow the same format and approach, the vastness and diversity of the country makes it impossible to cover the whole of India in one volume. It has been divided culturally rather than geographically, with a companion volume commissioned on Buddhist and Hindu India. The first part will enable the visitor to place the sights and monuments in their historical, cultural and religious context. The second part is a gazetteer of principal sites, monuments and related museums, with detailed maps and plans.
