This textbook details the management perspective on the production/operations function in a business. It provides a review of the important concepts underlying the POM task, and sets the relevant issues and techniques of POM within the broader context of management and control of the whole business. A strategic approach to POM is integrated throughout, and the need for strategic context in which to place the POM function is emphasized. Organized in three sections, the first one sets the scene by explaining some general background to the production/operations function, the derivation of these titles and the role of the manager of this function; sections two and three reflect the main split in the POM function, the former concerns process-related issues, and the latter, infrastructure-related issues. The fourth section comprises 22 case studies covering all the key areas in the text, thus presenting a well-balanced mix of text and cases for all teaching purposes. The book is suitable for all undergraduate courses in business studies, and for MBA and other taught postgraduate courses.
