Investors are being advised to look abroad, and this compilation-which lists 2600 of the world's largest companies-gives them a first, valuable step to the markets of Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Canada. Grouped by country, the listings include a brief description of the business, sales and profits for the last two years, phone and FAX numbers, yield, price/earning ratio, book value and price of the stock, mailing address, and the names of the president and chair. A two-or three-page summary by a local broker introduces each country's listing. These summaries can be interesting; readers learn, for instance, that several countries no longer have floor trading, having replaced it with electronic settlement. Two indexes conclude the work: one by company and one by industry. Unfortunately, the numbers are already out of date (there is nothing after September 30, 1993) and the serial Value Line does a better job on the U.S. companies. Still, this is a good bet for business collections.
