This concise look at language as a rhetorical tool focuses on teaching and learning about grammar, usage, and punctuation through play and experimentation. The emphasis is on having readers work with language in ways that develop their meta-linguistic awareness–showing how we work language and how we make it work for us. The presentation of the concept of sentence play, or sentence manipulation through a variety of avenues, helps readers develop control over sentence complexity and sentence variation as related to purpose and audience. The book also emphasizes the role of reading in the development of command over written language. Easy to understand and navigate, Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation presents the ideas of each chapter with objectives, a discussion of the main concept(s), key assumptions, and detailed applications with variations.

  • A consistent organization makes the concepts exceptionally clear.
  • Sample lesson plans show how to implement the concepts within the context of the regular classroom.
  • Activities demonstrate the relevance of having a command over tense and personal pronouns and motivate readers to explore and study language use
  • Exercises encourage readers to play with language and consider choices and options.
  • The discussion of discourse communities helps students explore their study and application of grammar, usage, and punctuation in a variety of contexts.
