Amir Hossein Alavi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and holds courtesy appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, at the University of Pittsburgh, United States. His multidisciplinary scientific studies are organized around three research thrusts: 1) mechanics and electronics of multifunctional materials and structures, 2) embedded self-powered sensing systems, and 3) data-driven characterization, design and discovery of engineering systems.
One of the challenges posed by an aging infrastructure networks is developing innovative civil infrastructure monitoring solutions. Advanced Structural Sensing and Monitoring Systems provide engineers and researchers with a guide to the latest breakthroughs in the deployment of smart monitoring technologies over the past three decades. This includes the deployment of new monitoring technologies for continuous assessment and evaluation of civil infrastructure damaged as a result of a natural disaster.
Distributed smart structural sensing systems are a vital component of a smart infrastructure platform in smart cities infrastructure. Advanced Structural Sensing and Monitoring Systems: Advanced Structural Sensing and Monitoring Systems introduces research engineers and engineering designers to the latest innovations in the area of advanced structural sensing systems and how they can be integrated into the planning and design of smart cities. Topics include complementary technological paradigms such as machine learning, big data analytics, cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT). With this book in hand, researchers and design engineers will find a valuable reference in terms of civil infrastructure health monitoring, advanced computation, data mining, data fusion, and state-of-the-art nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) techniques.
