Examines a group of proteins that seem to help other proteins fold into their biologically functional three-dimensional shapes, a phenomenon that until recently was considered to be self-organization. Discusses how the concept of such chaperone molecules arose, the evolutionary relationships of chaperonins, photosynthetic organisms, mitochondria, eukaryotic cytosol, the regulation of gene expression, kinetic and energetic aspects, prokaryotic chaperonins, structure and conformational changes, and immunological aspects.
