This Code of Practice (COP), which applies to England, Wales and Scotland, is one of two COPs giving practical guidance on the operation of Part 2 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. This COP explains how disabled people are protected from discrimination if they are in employment, if there are seeking employment, or if they are involved in a range of occupations. It also gives guidance on the law which is intended to help lawyers when advising their clients, and to assist courts and tribunals when interpreting new legal concepts. It comes into force on 1 October 2004, when it will supersede the 1996 "Code of practice for the elimination of discrimination in the field of employment against disabled persons or persons who have a disability" (Department for Education and Employment, ISBN 0112709540). The second COP covers trade organisations and qualifications bodies (ISBN 0117034185)
