This document provides evidence-based best practice guidance on the design and layout of sanitary spaces for use in healthcare settings to cater for the needs of patients, visitors and staff. Most of the sanitary spaces covered come under one of four categories: ambulant; semi-ambulant, suitable for people who walk with difficulty; independent wheelchair; assisted, suitable for users who may be in a wheelcahair, mobile hoist, sanitary or shower chair or may use a walking stick, who need the help of at least two staff to use the facilities (patient spaces only).
