This code of practice, prepared in accordance with Section 118 of the Mental Health Act 1983, provides guidance for statutory authorities, managers and professional staff working in the health and social services on how they should undertake their duties under the Act. The code states that individuals should be as involved as much as possible in the formulation and delivery of their care treatment. Guidance is given on assessment of patients, admission procedures, treatment and aftercare, and attention is also given to particular groups of patients such as those with a mental handicap, children and young people.
