This wonderful book is in really good condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. First published in 1975, First Edition by Hutchinson of London. 176 pages all intact, all pages, text and stunning illustrations are in super good, clean, readable order. It is probably true to say that the attitudes, hopes and fears of each generation are best represented or evoked by the popular songs of the time. Its is certainly true of the generation which endured the war of 1914-1918. The very titles of the songs conjure up the atmosphere of those years, even for those who were born two or three decades later. "Good-bye-ee!", "Its a Long Way to Tipperary", "There's a Long Trail", "Take me back to Dear Old Blighty", "Keep the Home Fires Burning", - They sum up that mixture of tragedy and humour, bravery and sentimentality, stoicism and disillusion which seems to be the hall-mark of the First World War. The complier "Colin Walsh" of this scrapbook has built each chapter round each song of the times. Each song is followed by a collection of items relating to its theme and garnered from Colin Walsh's extensive collection of picture postcards, newspaper cuttings, published and unpublished diaries and letters, cartoons and from many other sources. This book he says " is my impression of The Great War and by inference - the impression held by others of my generation who have known neither the sound nor sight of war". "In a sense it is also a kind of tribute to the grandfather he never knew, one of those missing believed-dead statistics that always a left a nagging doubt.
