This book introduces the Internet and some of the methodology upon which it is based and embodies two main goals. First, the student should become comfortable with the mechanics of using the Internet in the common ways: via e-mail, the World Wide Web, FTP, etc. To serve this goal, the book covers concepts and terminology that an Internet user is most likely to encounter. Second, the student should gain an understanding of the methods used internally by Internet tools: naming schemes, coding techniques, communication protocols, etc. To serve this goal, the book covers the methods that make the Internet possible. The chapters have practical exercises and problems at the end intended to reinforce or extend the students understanding.
