Chapter One

Karma

Where Did Karma Come From?

The depth of people's confusion about karma doesn't surprise me. Ask ten people the meaning of the word and you'll get ten different answers. Doesn't it mean destiny? Wasn't that a word used in the 1960s at Woodstock? I think karma means I did something wrong. Isn't it something to do with the Buddhists? Oh, yeah, it means fate! Most people know that the Ten Commandments come from the Bible, but they have no idea where karma originated.

Karma and reincarnation are the principal doctrines of Buddhism and were also taught by systems of esoteric philosophy such as the Pythagorean and Platonic schools. But for our practical purposes I will begin with Adam and Eve.

Adam and Eve

The need for health, sex, money, and power was born the moment the spirit entered the physical body and was forced to live in the material world. The defining moment occurred when Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden.

They were given everything with one condition: Do not eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They ate the fruit. They broke the law. They paid the price. No god dictated their karma; they brought it upon themselves. Adam and Eve were banished from their perfect life. From that moment on, everybody had to work hard to earn happiness. There was no more free lunch. Materiality then became a necessity for spiritual accomplishment. Simply put, we had to work for our food and shelter, deal with personal relationships, face health problems, and die.

Karma was born when mankind was born. The story of Adam and Eve is a metaphor for the spirit being incarnated into a physical body. Eden could be another word for the spirit world -- a place of beauty and harmony where the soul exists after the body dies. Adam and Eve's banishment gave us our schoolroom for the soul's development. The physical world gives each one of us myriad opportunities to learn ultimately how to live in balance -- harmony. The karmic strokes that seem harsh often turn out to be the best things that could happen.

You May Be Wondering How I Know About Karma

First, as a psychic, I have an innate belief in the law of karma. My psychic gift gives me the ability to perceive things without being told. Karma always made perfect sense to me. Second, my studies of Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Theosophy support that belief. Third, in-depth discussions with my Master Teacher confirm that karma is the only practical, sound, sensible, comprehensive, intelligent, logical, down-to-earth, matter-of-fact, sane answer to why good things happen to bad people or why bad things happen to good people. Fourth, I have seen the effect of karma in action in my life and in the lives of every person I've encountered.

Whether people understand the law of karma or not, everybody is subject to its effects. For example, you didn't see the No Parking sign, but your car was ticketed anyway. You tried as hard as you could to convince the cop it wasn't your fault. However, you still got the ticket because you broke the law. Ignorance of the law was no excuse. Who among us has not experienced something like that?

My Curious Karma

Some people are born to be singers, doctors, scientists, or painters, and others are born with psychic gifts. Hundreds of people have asked me, Why were you born psychic and not me? I can give no answer except I was born with a psychic gift. I must have developed it during past lives. It's my karma to choose how I handle it in this one.

This gift, like all gifts, is useless if the recipient does nothing with it. An acorn will never grow into a tree if it isn't planted. It has taken motivation, discipline, introspection, patience, tenacity, and humor to shape my gift into a vehicle to help others. People with psychic gifts have existed since the beginning of humankind.

The first truly psychic experience I remember occurred when I was seven years old. My sister and I had moved to Iowa to live with our Grandma Grace. My Great-aunt Mayme owned the town's funeral parlor. One day she asked me to come over to answer the phone for her. After telling me exactly what to do in case a call came in, she left. Taking my job quite seriously, I sat in her office and stared at the phone. Not much time passed before restlessness overcame me, so I took a walk around the funeral parlor. Without knowing what had brought me there, I found myself drawn to one of the rooms, in which a wake was scheduled for later that day.

It was early, so no member of the deceased person's family had yet arrived. Still feeling too timid to enter, I stood outside the room in which the casket lay, perceiving a silence that had the quality of quiet one feels upon entering a church. Flowers and the waxy smell of candles filled the room. Suddenly a floral arrangement appeared to float in the air. For a moment the flowers seemed suspended in space, and then, ever so gently, they began to move through the room. I closed my eyes, then opened them again, expecting the apparition -- which must surely have been a figment of my imagination -- to have disappeared. Not so. The flowers were still suspended in air. Then I saw the ever-so-faint shadow of a woman holding the bouquet. She smiled radiantly, waved with one hand, replaced the flowers in their original spot, and disappeared. At that point I walked straight up to the coffin. The person lying in the casket was the woman who had been holding the flowers. I was not afraid. I felt great...
