R.L. Stine has more than 350 million English language books in print, plus international editions in 32 languages, making him one of the most popular children’s authors in history. Trip Park grew up in Ithaca, New York, and went to college at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was first drawn to advertising. He then moved to Chicago, later New York, where he joined advertising agencies and worked on kids’ favorites including Cap’n Crunch, Gatorade, Kellogg’s, and Ronald McDonald. His children’s commercials have won numerous awards. But advertising also brought something equally as rewarding. There he got to work with some of his favorite illustrators. Watching these artists create their pieces inspired Trip Park to try his hand at illustrating himself.

Trip Park has illustrated a number of children's books including Gopher Up Your Sleeve, written by Tony Johnston, Trout, Trout, Trout! (A Fish Chant) and Ant, Ant, Ant! (An Insect Chant), both written by April Pulley Sayre. He has also developed characters and helped animate commercials for Nickelodeon, The California State Fair, Lego, and many others. When Rotten School came along, the opportunity to translate to the drawing board R.L. Stine’s cast of kids was a wonderful chance to combine his love for children’s illustration with this group of rotten students. His work can be seen at www.tripparkproductions.com.

Joe Sweety is the worst kind of bully -- big, mean, and always ready to use his fists. Chipmunk is the shiest, clumsiest kid at Rotten School. Bernie decides it's time for the Haunting of Joe -- with spooky messages on the computer, green protoplasm in his room, and a body-wrap in an eerie cocoon. Will Bernie's payback work? Will it scare Joe into niceness?

The Ghost Walks at Night!

Warning: If you're afraid of ghosts, you'd better stop here.

Because, dudes, Rotten School is haunted!

I should know. I'm the one who is haunting it.

You've probably heard of me. I'm Bernie Bridges, fourth-grade superstar. I don't like to brag. But how else can I describe myself?

Catch these dimples when I smile. Killer—right?

If you've heard of me, you've probably heard of Joe Sweety, too. Sweety is the biggest, meanest, fiercest, bulliest, smackdown kid at Rotten School. If he bites you, you definitely get rabies. No joke.

We call him The Big Sweety. He works out thirty hours a day. Really. Joe can bruise you with his hair!

He's huge! He even has muscles on his teeth! The fronts of his T-shirts all say EXTRA-WIDE LOAD.

Get the picture? Sweety is not a sweetie.

So, what does this have to do with the school being haunted? Who set the evil ghost loose? And why has it chosen Joe Sweety as its next victim? Well, don't get your boxers in a knot. You'll find out soon. I can't tell you everything in the first chapter—can I?
