PreSchool-K In strong marching cadences, Winthrop catalogues the kinds and uses of footwear that a young child might have. There are "Shoes to skate in, shoes to skip in, shoes to turn a double flip in," plus bunny slippers, ballet shoes, and even stilts. All are worn by four tousle-headed, determined, and very active children. Squarish watercolor and colored pencil illustrations keep all the action where it belongswith the skippers, divers, and do-ers; adults are pictured only as midsections or torsos. The humorous ending takes a little liberty with "shoes," claiming, in two pages of alternating picture strips and four lines of text, that the very best "shoes" are those that will not pinch, or get handed down, or be too hot"your very own skinny-boned, wiggly-toed FEET." The preschool story hour groups will all be clapping hands and checking out each other's footwear after hearing this rollicking rhyming paean to shoes. Susan Hepler, Windsor Public Library, Conn.
